Static friction

ACTIVITY

Set the static coefficient of friction.
Increase the slope of the inclined plane (by using slider h) until  the brick begins to slide.
To adjust precisely, click on the slider 'h' and, at the same time:
  • use the arrow "=>" or "+" key for small increases of the parameter h
  • use the arrow  "<=" or "-" key for small decreases of the parameter h
At this point, the inclined plane is locked and the angle can be read. 
The tangent of this angle is the coefficient of friction:

μs=h/l

Repeat the experiment to find the minimum value of h for which  the brick begins to
slide
Move the slider friction to set a new value of the static coefficient of the friction
 

THEORY

Static friction is friction between two or more solid objects that are not moving relative to each other.  The coefficient of static friction, typically denoted as μs, is usually higher than the coefficient of kinetic friction.
The static friction force must be overcome by an applied force before the object is able to move.
